What Your Microbiome Has to Do With Your Heart
About a year ago, one of my clients was prescribed blood pressure medication at the age of 65. She started checking her numbers daily with a cuff synced to an app on her phone so that every reading would be tracked and any patterns could be more easily identified.
Five weeks ago, we started working together on the Whole Belly Reset.

But it is an opportunity for me to shine a light on a little-known connection that more midlife women should definitely know about. Because what my client continues to experience in relationship to her blood pressure is far from a fluke.
It turns out that the trillions of microbes living in your digestive tract play a surprisingly direct role in regulating blood pressure. Research involving adults between the ages of 48 and 60 has found that greater abundance and diversity of gut bacteria is significantly associated with a lower risk of hypertension. In other words, a thriving microbiome isn't just good for your digestion. It may be one of your most important tools for protecting your heart.
Here's how it works.
Your Gut Makes Compounds That Relax Your Blood Vessels
When you eat fiber — the kind found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes — your beneficial gut bacteria get to work fermenting it. One of the byproducts of that fermentation is a group of compounds called short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetate, propionate, and butyrate.
You may have heard of butyrate before in the context of gut health, but its role extends beyond the intestinal lining. SCFAs enter the bloodstream and interact with receptors on the smooth muscle cells that line your blood vessels and when they do, those vessels relax.
Relaxed blood vessels mean lower arterial pressure. As it turns out, this direct, measurable effect all starts in the gut.
A Leaky Gut Can Lead to Hypertension
A healthy gut microbiome does more than produce beneficial compounds. It also maintains the integrity of the intestinal wall. When this barrier is strong, it keeps what's inside your gut from getting into your bloodstream.
When the microbiome is out of balance, however, that barrier becomes more permeable. This is the condition often referred to as “leaky gut.” When the gut wall is compromised, toxins produced by harmful bacteria can slip through into systemic circulation and the immune system responds with inflammation.
Chronic, low-grade inflammation is one of the most well-established drivers of hypertension. This is one reason why gut dysbiosis and high blood pressure so frequently show up together. They're connected by the same inflammatory cascade.
Some Gut Bacteria Produce Compounds That Raise Blood Pressure
Here's a less well-known piece of the puzzle: certain gut bacteria can actually produce compounds that raise blood pressure.
When bacteria break down nutrients found in red meat and eggs, they produce a substance called trimethylamine (TMA), which the liver then converts into TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide). TMAO has been linked tothe narrowing of blood vessels, something referred to as vasoconstriction, and increased sensitivity to angiotensin II, a hormone that raises blood pressure.
Salt also plays a role here. A diet high in sodium reduces populations of beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus, which normally help counteract salt-sensitive hypertension by dampening pro-inflammatory responses. Reducing dietary salt, therefore, lowers blood pressure directly in addition to helping restore the microbial balance that protects against hypertension.
What to Do About It
The good news is that the dietary shifts that support a healthy microbiome are the same ones that support cardiovascular health more broadly. No complicated supplement protocols required.
Eat more prebiotic fiber. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and resistant starch (found in cooked and cooled potatoes) feed the beneficial bacteria that produce blood pressure-lowering SCFAs. This is the single most impactful change you can make for your microbiome.
Add polyphenol-rich foods. Berries, green tea, dark chocolate, and extra-virgin olive oil contain polyphenols that improve microbiome diversity and directly support blood vessel health. These are foods that work on both sides of the gut-heart connection.
Include fermented foods regularly. Yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and miso introduce live beneficial cultures into the gut. Research suggests that the blood pressure benefits of probiotics are most significant when consumed consistently over at least eight weeks.
Reduce ultra-processed foods and excess salt. Both deplete the beneficial bacteria that help regulate blood pressure and create conditions where the more harmful, hypertension-promoting bacteria thrive.
If you're managing hypertension or taking medication for it, any significant dietary changes are worth discussing with your doctor or healthcare provider first.
The Bigger Picture
Blood pressure regulation has always been about more than salt and stress. What the research is now making clear is that the microbiome is an active participant in cardiovascular health: producing compounds that relax blood vessels, maintaining the barrier that prevents inflammatory triggers from entering the bloodstream, and keeping the bacterial populations that raise blood pressure in check.
My client didn't set out to lower her blood pressure. She set out to feel better and have more energy to keep up with her very full life. Fortunately, when you give the gut what it needs to thrive, the rest of the body tends to follow.
